But does anyone here work in the Dulles (Washington D.C) International airport? My parents are supposed to be catching a flight from there to Toronto. It’s just over an hour until the flight takes off, and there’s no one at the check-in desk. So far Air Canada has been utterly useless. Their 1-888 number still shows the flight as scheduled (not cancelled), and they haven’t responded on Twitter. All the information desks in the airport are closed, and there’s no other phone numbers available to get a hold of Air Canada.
EDIT: Looks like supposedly their flight was cancelled, but Air Canada were utter turds and didn’t update their website. Had to find out it was cancelled from some 3rd party sites. Absolutely pathetic that they can’t be bothered to update their own website. Makes me wonder how many other people are stranded because of their stupidity.

Ju st have them just the gate. I’m sure that would get someone’s attention and they could help
Dsclaimer: I have a lot of bad ideas , that may be one

I suggested that. I figured they would get security’s attention pretty quick. They didn’t like that idea.

At this point, they are trying to catch _any_ flight to Toronto (or anywhere else in Canada, for that matter). They are saying the only check-in desk open is United, and their flight to Toronto was cancelled.

It’s probably best to tweet at @AirCanada, because we are a wicked people who must resort to such measures.

Tell them to c heck with United, Lufthansa, Singapore or Swiss — all are codeshare partners and might be able to help! Maybe they can escalate somewhere else.

I tried. They said the United desk was the only other one open, and they had cancelled their flight to Toronto.

Oh believe me, I have. They are getting a piece of me.

If the flight is still truly on, there will have to be someone at the gate eventually. The other thing I would do is try to find airport personnel. While individual airlines have info on their own or their partners’s flights, the airport should know everyone’s.
Good luck to them getting out. I wish I could actually help.

Ugh. Good luck. A few days before our lockdown, I told a co-worker now might be a very interesting time to go traveling. I vastly underestimated how quickly the airline industry would fall apart .
![]() 04/01/2020 at 16:09 |

At this point they might just need to plan to rent a car and take it up with the airline later. About a 9-hour drive. Won’t be fun* , but doable.
*The roads look awesome, but not under duress. Right up across PA and NY mountain country.

Except that probably isn’t going to happen. They were supposed to catch a flight from Toronto to Edmonton - about another 4 days drive. :(

Ahh, didn’t realize it was a connection. Sorry...sounds incredibly frustrating.
![]() 04/01/2020 at 16:20 |

I don’t know if it was a true connection, or just a matter of them catching another flight after.
They already spent 30+ hours in the back of a 747 transport from Madagascar, only to get stuck at Dulles, and not know it because Air Canada’s incompetent website.

Have them Rent a 172, put additional fuel in the back seat and set off. They should get to edmonton by next tuesday.

Sadly, company websites seem to be second-tier to social media and third parties now. Crazy how that works, but not totally unexpected either. Hope they get some great compensation from this.

The border is closed, they can’t fly or drive to Canada
![]() 04/01/2020 at 16:40 |

That was probably the same flight. Sucks man...good luck to them. They may wanna try to get to a hub like LAX, ATL or Denver and hop from there.

Or get them to O’H are on United

They probably thought you knew the border was closed, in either direction. Announced ~ 10 days ago. Trucks ful l of stuff and other essential things can cross, that’s it.

Thing is, Air Canada has yet to tweet me back...

Everything I’ve seen indicates that Canadian citizens can return to Canada. It’s a pretty terrible idea and kind of defeats the purpose of doing all this stuff.

Looks like Air Canada flights to Toronto haven’t happened for several days:
American had a 4PM flight from Charlotte to Toronto toda y (AA5079), but I’m not seeing much else leaving the US. That flight is scheduled for tomorrow, but cancelled for 4/3:
The only US flights I saw on Toronto’s departure board were Charlotte and Atlanta, and I didn’t see any Atlanta flights coming back to Toronto.
At this point, they probably should just rent a car. Otherwise, they are looking at connecting to some hub, or flying via London.

There are still some flights. And people are allowed to return home. But with so little traffic, it doesn’t really make sense for the airlines to fly these routes so most of them are cancelled.
![]() 04/01/2020 at 17:33 |

I’m reasonably certain the border folks will le t ‘em go home. That said, it’s probably not economically viable to operate flights.

Also, Air Canada is claiming that they will do this for April:
Having looked at some airports though, I’m not convinced they are really flying that frequently.

I’m impressed/bewildered by the apparent fact that such a journey is actually possible at this point in time.
Pretty much any passenger flight into Oz at the moment is government sponsored and all passengers go into mandatory government quarantine immediately on arrival for 14 days. They are then transferred to their home state where they must do another 14 days of self isolation.
No Australian is currently allowed to even leave the country unless the journey meets very specific criteria...

The border has been locked down, so they might get across it on land, but only because they’re Canadian citizens. The fact they made it into the US is practically a miracle.

I just wish they would have actually updated the list of cancelled flights. I had to find out that the flight was cancelled - not from Air Canada’s website - but from some other third party site.

They are supposedly booked on a United flight for tomorrow morning.

Getting from Dulles to Toronto is only part of the battle.
They had to catch a US diplomatic flight from Madagascar to Dulles. It took them 30+ hours on a rented/leased 747 cargo with a bunch of seats bolted in the back. The crew manning the flight were wearing full hazmat gear and took everyone’s temperature 3 times before boarding.

That’s the first place I checked as well, but it’s nothing but lies. They were supposed to be on AC7709, which shows as listed there, but it was cancelled - with no indication from Air Canada that it was cancelled.
![]() 04/01/2020 at 18:48 |

It is. They had to catch a US diplomatic flight from Madagascar on a 747 normally used for carrying cargo. It took them 30+ hours to make it that far.

Sadly, they probably should have waited until they could get one directly to Canada, because they might be stuck in the US for an indefinite amount of time or need to drive to the border (if it’s even open to let them in).
![]() 04/01/2020 at 19:48 |

It sounds like they have a flight scheduled for tomorrow morning.
As far as I know, there’s no direct flights from Madgascar to Canada, at least any time soon. Madagascar closed their borders. The only reason they couldn’t get out earlier is because my dad had the flu (not COVID), and there’s no way they would let him on an airplane. He had it for a few weeks before there were any reported cases, and before they closed the border.

That's quite an.... adventure?
